‘Lame Duck’ Trump Pardons Turkey, But ‘Prophetic’ 2018 Edition Gets All the Attention | Abroad

Donald Trump, as incumbent president, has pardoned a turkey on the occasion of Thanksgiving according to annual tradition. The ceremony is usually an opportunity for the president to throw some jokes, but the current political situation in the US made it a sad affair.

Because America is in a transitional period between two different presidents, Donald Trump has been referred to as a ‘lame duck’ or ‘lame duck’. That means he cannot function as before because his loss of the presidential election has left him paralyzed. Trump still refuses to admit that election defeat, but is now giving winner Joe Biden’s transition team the space to get to work. The Donald himself has hardly appeared in public in recent weeks, but for the grace of the turkeys he made an exception.

It wasn’t all that much fun there in the White House. The Guardian described Trump as “an aging comedian who sees his audience shrinking.” Trump praised his wife Melania for decorating the Rose Garden, saying the US is a country that loves farmers. He also thanked the health workers for their efforts during the corona crisis, while remaining completely himself: he spoke again about the “Chinese virus”. He also told about the tradition of pardoning turkeys on the occasion of Thanksgiving. Since George HW Bush’s presidency, the pardon has taken place every year.

This time, Corn and Cob (Maïs and Kolf) were the two turkeys to be pardoned. It was Corn who won the case.

But there was so much to laugh about this year, in contrast to the days gone by of Barack Obama’s silly jokes during his presidency. Or Trump himself, who sometimes showed himself in shape in the past. Like last year, the impeachment proceedings against him are over. Or in 2018, when he joked with, in retrospect, strikingly predictive power.

On the online vote which turkey should survive, Carrots (Carrots) or Peas (Peas), Donald Trump said then, “The winner of this vote was determined by a fair and open election on the White House website. This was a fair election. Unfortunately, Carrots did not want to admit defeat and demanded a recount. The battle with Carrots continues. ” He eventually pardoned both turkeys in 2018, even though Carrots did suffer a defeat. “I have to tell you that we have come to a decision,” Trump said. “Carrots, I am sorry to inform you that the result has not changed. Bad luck, Carrots. ”
