Despite the recent precipitation, swimming is still prohibited or not recommended in Lake Neuchâtel. The samples taken in the water following the presence of cyanobacteria are still being analyzed, the cantonal police of Neuchâtel announced on Monday.
The link between the deaths of the dogs last week and the presence of this bacteria is very likely, but has not yet been confirmed. The measures to ban bathing in the area concerned, between Colombier and the mouth of the Areuse, therefore remain valid for the time being, as does the recommendation issued for the rest of the Neuchâtel coast.
The weekend thunderstorms and precipitation as well as the drop in temperatures have probably improved the situation regarding the presence of cyanobacteria on the Neuchâtel shores of the lake. Nevertheless, the precautionary measures remain relevant pending the results of analysis carried out by the cantons of Vaud, Friborg and Neuchâtel.
Communication this week
A joint communication should take place during the week, adds the Neuchâtel police.
Last week, six dogs died in 24 hours due to the presence of cyanobacteria, also called blue algae, in Lake Neuchâtel. Swimming has been prohibited between Colombier and the mouth of the Areuse and is not recommended anywhere else.
Cyanobacteria or blue algae thrive when lakes warm. They produce substances that can poison a person or animal that swallows water.
Symptoms are also manifested by vomiting or diarrhea. Neurological disorders can lead to the death of the individual. One of the substances emitted by cyanobacteria is microsystin, according to the Federal Institute for the Study of Water (Eawag).
For humans, small children, who can sometimes carry objects in their mouths, and swimmers are the main risk group.
