Lack of vitamin D promotes coronavirus mortality

Lack of sunlight could worsen the symptoms of covid-19, according to a study by scientists from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation Trust and the University of East England.

As Science Alert reports, they have compared statistics on vitamin D levels in 20 European countries, and found a correlation between low levels of this vitamin that the body finds especially in sunlight, and mortality from Covid -19.

This type of study has its drawbacks, since it is not known for example if people with high levels of vitamin D do have other characteristics that make them less vulnerable.

But previous studies had shown that people with high levels of vitamin D were less vulnerable to influenza and tuberculosis, as well as children, to asthma.

In general, scientists believe that vitamin D could help the immune system to fight external aggressions.

However, it is too early to consider taking supplements to prevent serious symptoms of covid-19 as beneficial. But exposing yourself to the sun, even at your window in these times of confinement, can certainly not do any harm (provided you avoid sunburn).
