La Tuque Steel Manufacturing Company Pro-Mec Élite Receives $4.1 Million in Government Funding for Expansion

The Pro-Mec Élite company in La Tuque has received financial support of $4.1 million from the governments of Quebec and Ottawa to continue its expansion. Specializing in the manufacturing of steel structures, the company has contributed to several major projects such as the REM in Montreal, the new Champlain Bridge and the Gouin Dam. Among the region’s projects in its order book: the Laviolette and Piles bridges. “It’s made here! It’s a source of pride!” notes Mykaël Duchesne, engineer and partner at Pro-Mec Élite.

Almost all of Pro-Mec Élite’s contracts are outside La Tuque. Its owner nevertheless chose to remain established in his hometown because it was also an attraction for workers. “The Colombians, the Brazilians, the French… all those who chose our company, it’s because of the living environment,” explains Denys Dufresne.

The company has 38 employees including 13 foreign workers.

The company’s digital transformation will allow it to respond to labor scarcity. “The lack of manpower is obvious for us,” mentions Denys Dufresne. He claims to have invested more than 14 million since 2019 to improve his productivity.

Mykaël Duchesne believes that the company will be able to do well in the coming years, particularly in the development of the Energy Transition Valley. “We are talking about batteries of road works, major projects. With days like today and the support of all these people, it’s sure to help us greatly”

The investments are far from over as Pro-Mec Elite has purchased a Trois-Rivières company specializing in the manufacturing of aluminum and stainless steel parts. The entrepreneurs have also planned a succession plan, to think far and wide.

And who knows perhaps that father and son, Denys and Mykaël, will soon be able to count on a third generation in the company. “Pro-Mec has been around for 30 years, I’m 31 years old. I was raised on a steel beam… We hope it has the same effect!”, he laughs, watching one of his two sons walk on a beam.
