La Nación / “The best vaccine is the one you have available,” says critical medicine specialist

Dr. Sergio Zanotti is a specialist in critical medicine and intensive care, from Houston, USA, ensures that the best vaccine is the one available, since all of them were developed in different scenarios or epidemiological situations in the world and that they have managed to slow down the number of hospitalized and deaths from COVID-19.

He affirmed that any effort to obtain any type of vaccines to immunize the population is valid and urged the authorities to continue pushing to obtain those vaccines regardless of the percentage of effectiveness. He also urged the population to continue taking care of themselves using masks, washing hands, distancing themselves and avoiding places of crowds of people, especially closed places.

“The best vaccine is the one you have available and I recommend that people get the vaccine that is available as soon as possible, because people are looking very closely at the percentages of effectiveness. For example, the Pfizer vaccine reported 95% effectiveness in 43,000 patients and then that of Johnson & Johnson, which on average reported between 65 and 70% effectiveness also in 43,000 patients ”, explained Dr. Zanotti in communication with channel 4.

He added that people need to understand two things: first that these studies were conducted at different times in the pandemic, Pfizer’s was done with much lower incidence and very little penetration of the new variants, while Johnson & Johnson’s was done in South Africa with the variant found there.

“Vaccines have been overwhelmingly effective, almost 100% in preventing hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19, that is the goal of vaccines,” he emphasized.

According to Zonotti, the dynamics of this pandemic is complex and that countries that are accelerating the level of immunization such as Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States are decreasing the new cases per million and that this is quite encouraging.

“What worries a little here in the US is that vaccines alone for so many people may take time and may not be the absolute solution to contain this pandemic immediately, and we have seen a stagnation in new cases, which calls us the attention and this worries us a bit if this is a matter of variants or people’s behavior. I think the message from scientists in all countries is that they are seeing a positive movement, we must still take care of ourselves, wear masks, distance ourselves, wash our hands and avoid places with a lot of people, especially in closed places ”, indicated Zanotti.
