La Manche Private Hospital uses virtual reality to prevent risks in the operating room

Its 3D simulation module called “the error block” is a serious game in virtual immersion in the heart of an operating theater intended for the continuing education of healthcare professionals, interns and externs.

The clinic’s block teams worked in conjunction with the establishment’s training institute for nursing assistants (Ifas), to optimize the pedagogical approach of this professional training. Virtual reality has established itself for its performance, its adoption rate linked to the playful aspect, but also its ability to significantly reduce costs and travel times. This training of healthcare teams can in fact be carried out remotely: a connection and a virtual reality headset are sufficient.

“The choice was also naturally oriented towards a virtual reality device in order to optimize risk management in a particularly exposed technical environment such as the operating theater”, explains Bruno Bouhourd, director of Ifas and director of care.

The 360 ° errors block was developed by the Private Hospital for educational engineering (scenarios, methods and techniques). The plastron actors are health professionals from the clinic and student nursing assistants from Ifas.

Four scenarios were imagined by the team, then imaged in an immersive 360 ° video by the Caen start-up VRV-Prod before being reworked to optimize learning conditions by the Rennes start-up Simango, virtual reality health training organization.

Equipped with virtual reality headsets or navigating on their PC via a software package, participants visualize the operating room as if they were there and evolve in the representation of common work situations in search of errors that could have an impact on the grip in charge of patients.

Presented at conferences and used since October 2020 by the teams of the clinic block, the “errors block” in virtual reality has become “a powerful immersive and educational tool for training by simulation of caregivers, internal and external students”.

“They interact with their work environment and co-build new professional skills for the benefit of the quality of patient care,” said Agnès Michelle, manager of the blocks and outpatient department of the private hospital, who listed all these mistakes to be avoided in operating theaters.

“Our obligations in terms of training for healthcare professionals are becoming more and more restrictive, and with this serious game in augmented reality, we have optimized costs, but above all developed and enhanced the internal skills of the establishment in the service of patient safety and well-being, “says Vincent Gervaise, General Manager of the Private Hospital.

This teaching has the advantage of “reinforcing performance and safety in operating theaters”, of “promoting training thanks to an innovative, efficient, reliable, dynamic, fun and reproducible device” and educational support can be provided remotely (individual or group remote workshops, downloadable tools) to reduce wasted time and indirect costs (trips, accommodation, catering), underlines the clinic.

This innovative educational project should quickly be adopted by the forty establishments of the Vivalto Santé group. Many are already using it; around half, said Bruno Bouhourd, to APMnews / TICsanté. The tool is made available free of charge to clinics that take training from the Simango company.

Started in 2016 by the simulation center at Ifas (simulation chamber and high-fidelity mannequin), the complete project benefited in 2019 from an Feder grant (European Regional Development Fund) for 50% of its investments initials (around € 56,000 out of the € 100,000 invested).
