La Jornada – The playwright, actor and theater director Ángel Norzagaray dies

Mexico City. The playwright, actor, stage director, university professor and journalist Ángel Norzagaray died this Monday, a victim of cancer that had afflicted him for some time.

The National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) had planned in January 2022 to give a recognition for his artistic career, to the former vice-rector of the Autonomous University of Baja California. Now, it will be done posthumously.

Writer and former university official, Nozargaray was born in Guasave, Sinaloa, in 1961, and studied acting at the Veracruzana University and received a doctorate in Spanish Letters from the University of Valladolid, Spain. He was a professor at the Autonomous University of Baja California, where he served as vice-rector.

He founded and directed the theater group Mexicali a Secas. He also directed the Baja California Institute of Culture, which later recognized him as “emeritus creator.”

He is the author of works such as The wake of the mangoes (1992), An island called California (1994), co-authored with Jesús González Dávila, and Letters at the foot of a tree.

His works have been presented at festivals such as the International Cervantino, the International of the Golden Age in Texas, the Don Quixote of Paris and the American Folklife of the Smithsonian Institution. They were also presented in Los Angeles, Cádiz, Colombia, Nicaragua and Miami, as well as in the INBAL National Theater Show.

He received awards such as the Baja California State of Journalism and the Mexican Association of Theater Critics. He was also awarded the State Prize for Literature and the Xavier Villaurrutia Medal in 2012, awarded by INBAL.
