La Jornada – In the world, 3 billion still do not receive a vaccine: UN

New York., The United Nations (UN) warned yesterday that the covid-19 pandemic is not over and could continue even longer due to the “shockingly unequal” distribution of vaccines, since almost 3 billion people (around of 38 percent of the world population, estimated at 7.8 billion), do not even have the first dose despite the fact that “manufacturers produce 1.5 billion a month”.

“The most tragic havoc has been on the health and lives of millions of people, with more than 446 million cases worldwide, more than 6 million confirmed deaths, and countless others dealing with deteriorating mental health.” said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), assured in a remote press conference that “this pandemic is far from over and it will not end anywhere if it is not achieved everywhere.”

The WHO reported that infections and deaths in the world fell 5 and 8 percent in the past seven days, respectively, with the exception of the Western Pacific, where cases grew 46 percent.

Mexico, in interpandemic

Sylvain Aldighieri, PAHO’s incident manager for covid-19, pointed out that Mexico could enter an “interpandemic period” given that in recent weeks it has reported a continuous drop in infections and deaths, but recommended not relaxing non-pharmacological preventive measures to avoid a setback.
