La Jornada – A wave of 500 foreigners sweeps through Texas

About 500 migrants crossed the Rio Grande, from downtown Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, with the aim of reaching El Paso, Texas, and surrendering to elements of the Border Patrol, to seek political asylum from the US government. At least half were Venezuelans, according to the versions.

Since last Friday, hundreds of undocumented immigrants have arrived in Juárez in trucks and vans; the human traffickers who lead them leave them on the Mexican bank of the Bravo. One of the places they cross is in the area near the Black Bridge, where a train passes from the center of Juárez to El Paso.

Enrique Valenzuela, coordinator of the State Population Council, said: “We have seen many crossings; They tell me they were Venezuelans, I managed to see some of them, but I couldn’t confirm what nationality they were. According to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), 24,916 migrants were detained in the El Paso sector last July, including 610 Venezuelans.

Nearly 5,000 Haitian migrants were stranded in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, after the US government suspended asylum procedures at its consulate in that border town, Mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosas said.

Municipal party chairman Morena indicated that Consul Deana Kim “informed me that CBP will no longer accept Haitians,” who were waiting in Nuevo Laredo as they were summoned to seek refuge in the neighboring country.

Canturosas has assured that the 11 shelters managed by the municipality are operating to their full capacity and his government will continue to support them with shelter and food.

All foreigners are estimated to have permits to be in Mexico and work, but the group’s plan is unknown.
