Kunstkwartier Witte de With immediately renounces | NOW

The Rotterdam center for contemporary art Witte de With immediately renounces the name ‘Witte de With’, the art center reports on Facebook on Saturday. Withdrawing the name should provide more space for ‘imagination’.

This weekend, logos and letters will be removed from the building and social media channels will be examined.

The art center announced in mid-June that a new name would follow in late January. In a statement, the art institution reports that “the pace at which changes are made is important.”

The name Witte de With refers to the Dutch VOC navigator Witte Corneliszoon, who died in 1658. The name of the seventeenth century Rotterdam fleet guardian adorned the facades of the art center for thirty years.

The name change was already announced in 2017. The art quarter recently drew attention to the change again after Black Lives Matter activists had the facades defaced.
