KPCDI Urges the Government to Prioritize Patients with Kidney Failure to Get Covid-19 Vaccination

Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Chairman of the Indonesian Dialysis Patient Community (KPCDI) Tony Richard Samosir urged the government to immediately set chronic kidney failure patients as priority recipients the Covid-19 vaccine. This must be done keeping in mind the patient chronic renal failure is a part of the population that is susceptible to exposure to the virus corona.

“The government must immediately determine kidney failure patients as priority vaccine recipients, as well as health workers, the elderly and public servants,” said Tony in the statement received. Beritasatu.com, Monday (29/3/2021).

It is said that the number of patients suffering from end-stage renal failure in Indonesia has touched 250,000 people. From the KPCDI records, the death rate for patients with kidney failure who are exposed to Covid-19 is quite high.

It is even more concerning, until today there are still very few hospital facilities (RS) that provide special isolation rooms as well as hemodialysis room equipment. “

The vaccination policy protects not only patients with kidney failure but also medical personnel. There are nurses, doctors, the patient’s family at home and all parties because of the high level of interaction to and from the hospital, “said Tony.

The same thing was conveyed by three global kidney organizations that asked governments across countries to prioritize chronic kidney failure patients who are undergoing the dialysis process to get the Covid-19 vaccination.

Mereka adalah American Society of Nephrology (ASN), The European Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) dan International Society of Nephrology (ISN).

In their statements, the three organizations explained that people with kidney failure could not isolate themselves at home because they had to go through the dialysis process to a health facility two to three times a week. In doing the dialysis process the time it takes is about 3-4 hours.

“To receive this life-saving treatment. They are too sick and vulnerable to travel to public vaccination sites. So it is important to have to prepare vaccines at the patient’s dialysis site,” said the three Presidents of the Global Kidney Organization.

The board of the Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialist Association (PB PAPDI) also provides recommendations for patients with chronic kidney disease, geriatrics and cardiovascular disease to get Covid-19 vaccination.

Chairperson of PAPDI Sally A. Nasution, explained that several things that are taken into consideration for vaccination are efforts to achieve herd immunity or herd immunity in the Indonesian population to cut off the transmission of Covid-19 so that a broad vaccination coverage is needed.

Following up on these recommendations, the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Nephrology Association (PB Pernefri) Dr. Aida Lydia explained that his party had communicated intensively with the Ministry of Health (Kemkes). Likewise, an international appeal to vaccinate patients with kidney failure has also been conveyed.

However, the mass vaccination is of course adjusted to the number of Covid-19 vaccines in Indonesia and will be carried out in stages. In Indonesia, according to Aida, it still prioritizes vaccination for health workers, the elderly, and public services.

Aida asked all parties to be patient because both Pernefri and the Ministry of Health had worked hard to provide vaccines so far. “Including hemodialysis people will have a turn, of course we are patient,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious and Zoonotic Diseases, said that patients with chronic kidney failure have entered into the target criteria for vaccination.

In giving priorities for vaccination, his party still refers to the recommendations given by the World Health Organization (WHO). His party is also still waiting for priority recommendations for vaccines against patients with certain diseases from the Indonesian Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (ITAGI). PAPDI and the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI).

“In general, it is included in the criteria and they (patients with chronic kidney failure) will get the vaccine recipients,” explained Nadia.

Regarding the implementation of vaccination for kidney failure patients, Nadia stated that all of them will be included in the national vaccination scheme just like the others. He is also not sure when it will be carried out. It all depends on the recommendations and the burden of vaccination being carried out.

For a recommendation to provide vaccination for chronic renal failure patients in the hemodialysis unit, Nadia stated that the implementation can be done at a hospital that has registered itself to become a vaccination post.

“So please come but according to their age. If elderly people with kidney disease and age 60 can now be vaccinated. Or whether the patient (by profession) is a public service provider and has kidney problems, he will certainly also get vaccinated,” he said.
