“I don’t want to be interviewed,” I politely declined.

A Korean family of five who dramatically escaped from the Gaza Strip, the battlefield between Israel and the Palestinian armed faction Hamas, arrived in Korea on the afternoon of the 6th.

The return flight from Dubai to Incheon (EK322), carrying five family members who escaped from Gaza, including Mr. Choi (44), arrived at Incheon International Airport at around 5:05 pm on this day.

They departed from Cairo the previous afternoon local time, passed through Dubai, and arrived in Korea that day.

They left Incheon Airport together after hugging and greeting their relatives who met them at the arrival hall.

When asked by a reporter about how they felt about returning to Korea, Choi and others politely declined to answer, saying, “I don’t want to be interviewed anymore.”

The Choi family, who have lived in Gaza City for over seven years, went to a relative’s house immediately after the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on the 7th of last month, but fled to the southern city of Khan Younis three days later.

After enduring a situation where electricity and communication were cut off and not enough food, they waited for the border to open and entered Egypt through the Rafah border checkpoint on the 2nd, the day after Israel, Egypt, and Hamas agreed to allow foreigners and dual nationals to leave the country.

Previously, in an interview with Yonhap News, Mr. Choi said that seeing the war situation different from before made him escape out of fear that he might die in a silent bombing.

Mr. Choi also described the miserable life of a refugee in the Gaza Strip, where electricity and communication were cut off and food was scarce.

Meanwhile, as the war continued for a month on the 5th (local time), the death toll in Gaza approached 10,000. As Israel gradually strengthens its blockade and attacks, there are concerns that the resulting damage to civilians, including lack of food and medical resources, will increase.
