[휴스턴=뉴스핌] Correspondent Ko In-won = With President Yoon Seok-yeol departing for the United States ahead of the Korea-US summit on the 26th, Barrons and other local media reported that the main agenda of the summit will focus on Ukraine and China.

Barron’s, an American investment magazine, introduced President Yoon Seok-yeol’s visit to the United States on the 25th (local time), and the two leaders met amid growing conflicts and threats in the Asia-Pacific region, such as the escalating nuclear and missile threat from North Korea and deteriorating relations between China and Taiwan. It was reported that they would meet to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

In this regard, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said at a briefing on the 24th that the summit would yield results on cyber cooperation, climate change mitigation, foreign aid, investment, and people-to-people ties in addition to extended deterrence against North Korea.

However, in an interview with Barron’s, Kathryn Moon, a political science professor at Wellesley University in the US, emphasized that there are other “uncomfortable” topics for the leaders of the two countries to discuss.

First of all, while President Yoon Seok-yeol has left open the possibility of military aid to Ukraine, it is pointed out that there is a high possibility that South Korea will be pressured to provide ammunition to Ukraine or NATO during this visit to the United States.

South Korea provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine and sold tanks and self-propelled guns to Poland, but it has adhered to the principle of not providing weapons to conflict zones.

However, in an interview with Reuters on the 19th, President Yoon Seok-yeol said, “If there is a serious violation of the law of war, such as a large-scale attack on civilians by Russia in Ukraine, it may be difficult to insist on humanitarian aid or financial support.” He hinted at the possibility of arms support.

Reuters evaluated this as the first time that South Korea, which had dismissed the possibility of arms support for over a year, showed its will to provide weapons to Ukraine.

Also in the interview that day, President Yoon said regarding the cross-strait conflict between China and Taiwan and the tension in the international community surrounding it, “In the end, this tension is caused by an attempt to change the status quo by force.” I oppose it,” which caused a diplomatic conflict with China.

The Washington Post (WP) on the 24th also dealt with this through an article titled ‘The focus of the Korean president’s visit to the White House is Ukraine and China’.

In an interview with President Yoon, the media said, “Since Ukraine is under illegal invasion, it is appropriate to provide various aid, but considering the many direct and indirect relationships between our country and other countries, how and what we will supply I have no choice but to do it,” said President Yoon.

In addition, the WP said that security agreements with South Korea and Japan are becoming more important as China has recently shown its intention to challenge the world hegemony of the United States economically and militarily. The relationship between the two countries also mentioned the possibility of becoming an important topic for talks.
