As a follow-up to the 1st Summit, Korea’s Professor Kyung-moo Lee (Seoul National University) and Professor Hye-yeon Oh (KAIST) are participating in the preparation of the ‘Science Status Report’, which is in charge of Professor Yosua Bengio, and like major countries such as the UK, the US, and Japan, AI We plan to promote the establishment of an ‘AI Safety Research Institute’ in charge of safety research and evaluation.

As AI, such as generative AI and on-device AI, continues to advance technologically, it is spreading throughout everyday life, society, and industry, and there are concerns about the potential risks that advanced AI may cause, such as false information, deep fakes, and cybersecurity threats. Voices are getting louder.

While efforts to establish AI norms are in full swing in the international community and major countries, such as the UN high-level advisory body, the G7 AI Hiroshima Process, the US AI Executive Order, and the EU AI Act, Korea has been recognized for its digital technology and industrial capabilities and is an AI powerhouse in the Asian region. As such, he will take charge of the next summit meeting.

Accordingly, the plan is to lead specific discussions on the role of countries and companies so that AI can spread safely around the world.

At the kickoff meeting on this day, Vice Minister of Science and ICT Park Yoon-gyu and about 20 experts from industry, academia, and research institutes gathered together to share the results of the first summit and discuss the main goals and details of the second summit.

Attendees discussed in depth AI safety assessments, measures companies should take, and social risks of high-performance AI, and discussed ways to secure AI safety at a global level that can be realized in the domestic AI industry environment and to respond to AI’s enormous power consumption and carbon emissions. Opinions were also shared on proposals for sustainable AI development, including ensuring energy safety.

The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to hold frequent face-to-face and video conferences with the advisory group to specify the goals and agenda of the summit, and consult with the UK, the co-host country, and the countries participating in the summit on ways to support the development of Korea’s AI industry. am.
