Komňacky believes Baník could have secured fourth spot, but now they are averting the barrage without a complete team. | Currently.cz

Baník Ostrava’s performance is also poor under coach Pavel Hapal, and during the centenary celebrations, the club finds itself within sight of the Fortuna:League play-off bars. Former coach František Komňacký, who won the title in Ostrava in 2004, thinks about what is happening with the team and gives him an example of a team from another sport. Baník has an important encounter with Liberec today from 4:00 p.m.

How do you explain that Baník got a single point from the last six league matches?

He doesn’t play effectively enough. According to the names, the coaching staff and the background of the club, Baník should play for the fourth, maximum fifth place. It’s not like that, the fault is within the team. The miner is secure, the payouts are sure to go as they should. The problem must be in the attitude of the players, interplay, maybe tactics.

Sports manager Luděk Mikloško enjoyed the fact that after the arrival of Pavel Hapal the air was cleared, moreover, the spring part started with a draw and a win. But since then, the people of Ostrava have been driving each other.

They concede easily, on the contrary, they have a hard time asserting themselves in attack. The team is not strong enough in the round of 16, where the matches are decided. Especially in the defensive phase, there are so many mistakes that such experienced players, led by goalkeeper Jan Laštůvka, must not make. This is Baník’s biggest problem, the team scores cheap, sometimes funny goals. It affects confidence, then you can tailor the tactics as you want, but if the players don’t fulfill it, it’s no use. Furthermore, I lack more personalities on the field who could command, sometimes even yell and bully teammates. I would give them one example.

What example?

The Třinec hockey players, who were not optically better in the series with Sparta, may not have such a strong squad on paper. But they were much better as a team, that’s what the game is about. It’s the same in football, Baník must strengthen team spirit and determination.

What do you think could have happened to the team during the international break?

The players were certainly made to feel that things could not continue like this. It probably also affected their time off and rest. According to my information, they trained hard, now the team was in Poland for a training session for three days. That’s fine by me. The management made it clear to the players that they were not happy with the performances. It is a representation of the club and the entire region. If any of the players were not yet aware of the seriousness of the situation, I believe that it has now dawned on everyone.

That the worst can happen if such performance continues?

Instead of European cups, the game is about avoiding the playoffs, I don’t even want to talk about relegation. But it is much closer than cup ambitions. In my opinion, this was the content of the implementation team’s calls to the players outside of the actual training sessions on the pitch. The approach of footballers must change.

Liberec is in a similar situation in the table, but before the break they surprised with a draw against the first Slavia. The miner isn’t expecting anything easy today, is he?

I looked at the rest of Baník’s program and it’s really not easy at all. They have Slovácko away, Pilsen or Slavia at home. These are not sure points. You will not succeed against such teams if you do not go for blood. They can’t deal with anything other than rescue. Liberec is an unpleasant team, moreover, in a situation they are not used to. After all, they won the league several times. Two teams under strong pressure will meet, it will be a real war. I want to believe that Baník can do it.

Due to the disciplinary punishment, the part of the tribune where the miners’ boiler is located will be closed. Could it play a role?

Of course. We are used to a stormy environment at Baník, every opponent’s tackle and referee’s whistle is under the pressure of the audience. Spectators can create the combat atmosphere that players need now. It is wrong that this component will be weakened. But if I take it from the positive side, if the match did not go well, probably the booing from the stands would not be so loud.
