Kominfo Protests Ookla’s Inaccurate Speedtest Report Ranking Indonesia’s Internet Speed

Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) protested the Speedtest report by Ookla which was deemed inaccurate. In the report, Indonesia is the country with the slowest internet speed in the world, as well as in the Southeast Asia region.

Ookla always releases a Speedtest Global Index report every month, for both mobile and fixed broadband services. And, Indonesia’s internet speed is at the bottom in the ASEAN region. In the last few months Indonesia has only won compared to Cambodia and Myanmar.

Regarding this report, the Director of Resource Management at the Directorate General of SDPPI, Ministry of Communication and Information, Denny Setiawan, said that the internet speed report released by Ookla.

“I will complain to the friends who made Speedtest. If Indonesia is compared with Cambodia, I will also challenge whether India and China also have bad numbers? Because they use the median average,” said Denny at the Selular Business Forum 2023, Jakarta. , Monday (2/10/2023).

“That’s not fair, it’s like Persib fighting AC Milan. It has to be apple to apple,” he continued.

Even so, said Denny, Indonesia’s internet speed ranking in the world is a reflection that all parties must make breakthroughs so that Indonesia’s connections can be faster in the future.

“We are balancing the balance between policy and goal. Hopefully with this new revised PP, thank God it will be granted, all we have to do is do our homework (implement it) and continue the revised PP,” said Denny.

For information, Government Regulation (PP) Number 43 of 2023 concerning Types and Rates of Types of Non-Tax State Revenue that Apply to the Ministry of Communication and Information.

PP 43 of 2023 regulates PNBP originating from the use of radio frequency spectrum, issuance of certificates for telecommunications equipment and/or telecommunications equipment, testing of telecommunications equipment and/or telecommunications equipment, calibration of measuring instruments;, postal operations.

Then, the implementation of telecommunications, the implementation of broadcasting, the implementation of electronic systems and transactions, the implementation of functional training, the implementation of higher education training, as well as the use of facilities and infrastructure in accordance with duties and functions; and administrative fines in the fields of communications and informatics.
