David Oppenheimer and Company I LLC recalled all Zespri brand 1-pound clamshells of organic green kiwifruit as they may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website published the recall Aug. 8. It applies to 1-pound clear plastic clamshells bearing the Zespri brand and UPC code 8 18849 02009 3 and containing fruit stickered with the GTIN barcode 9400 9552.

According to the recall, the kiwis may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health’s routine sampling discovered the issue July 7, 2023, the kiwi recall states.

Since being notified Aug. 3, David Oppenheimer and Company worked with Zespri to trace the product through the supply chain to two grower lots and immediately ceased distributing them as it continues its investigation, the kiwi recall says.
