Kioxia Retires Plextor Brand for SSDs, Shifts Focus to Enterprise Market

Plextor is a brand that has been associated with high performance and quality but has now announced that it will cease operations. Parent company Kioxia has decided that it will retire the Plextor brand for SSDs for the general market. It will instead be marketed under the brand Solid State Storage Technology Corporation, SSSTC. The change takes place after Kioxia acquired Plextor and parent company Lite-On’s SSD operations in 2019.

Now, SSSTC and Kioxia will focus entirely on SSD sales in the enterprise, data center and industrial segments rather than the consumer market.

When PCIe Gen 4 and PCIe Gen 5 SSD controllers hit the market, Plextor chose not to adopt the new Phison and InnoGrit platforms and instead stuck with Marvell controllers, which failed to keep up to date the market situation.

While current Plextor SSD owners will continue to receive warranty support and access to RMA services, no new Plextor devices are expected to be launched.
