Thirty years after his mother celebrated Queen’s Day in Rotterdam, it is Willem-Alexander’s turn. He will celebrate his 10th anniversary in 010. On 27 April, the King will be welcomed by thousands of Rotterdam ‘kings & queens’ in the Maasstad.
The central theme of King’s Day 2023 is ‘We are all kings & queens’. The last time Rotterdam was allowed to receive a birthday head of state was in 1992, when Queen Beatrix visited the Maasstad. Beatrix then visited the Afrikaanderwijk, among other things. Willem-Alexander will literally follow in her footsteps on April 27, because the royal walking route also starts for him in the Afrikaanderwijk, near the Afrikaandermarkt to be precise.
Destroyed city
From the corner of Maashaven North and East, the family then sails across the Maas by water taxi. She passes the ss Rotterdam (the flagship of the Holland America Line), Hotel New York, and the Wilhelmina Pier and sails under the Erasmus Bridge. The crossing ends at the stairs in front of Plein 1940, at the war memorial ‘The destroyed city’. Then the family walks across the Blaak, towards the Laurenskerk to end up on the Binnenrotte via the Markthal.
Warm interest

The theme ‘We are all kings & queens’ is a choice of the inhabitants. They could choose from three themes, including ‘World port, world citizens’ and ‘The street belongs to everyone’. But ‘kings & queens’ was by far the most popular with fifty percent, especially among young people.
Different cuisines
The municipality: ‘Rotterdam does not think in boxes and sees the best sides of everyone during King’s Day.’ It is well known that Rotterdam can organize a big party. The municipality has engaged the project team that previously organized the Eurovision Song Contest.
Whether well-known Rotterdammers such as Lee Towers, Afrojack or Melissa Lopes have been approached to entertain the Oranjes on Binnenrotte, the host city cannot yet say, but it will be a party anyway. Mayor Aboutaleb hopes that the Oranjefeest will also lead to more fraternization. He promises that all colors and nationalities and all the scents of the different kitchens will be discussed. “Imagine what you see when you fly over Rotterdam, that will be King’s Day!”
