His private chef used to have to make tiramisu every day.”

During a car-free Sunday, King Philippe took a bike ride through the city with his son Prince Gabriel. He ended – yes – at a restaurant near the MAS. How spontaneous are such restaurant visits and what do the royals order? “This is prepared long in advance, sometimes even months. The king then has someone make a reservation under an pseudonym.” Our royalty expert continues: “Because everyone now knows how the family makes reservations, they have to keep looking for new names.” What does he like to order? “We know what he ate on Sunday. Shrimp croquettes as a starter, a Caesar salad as a main course and crêpes Suzette for dessert.”
Favorite dishes?
According to Wim Dehandschieter, King Filip especially likes ‘simple dishes’. “There is no greater pleasure for him than with spaghetti.” Just like Prince Laurent: “He really likes to eat spaghetti bolognaise with a coke. So it may also be unhealthy.” Our former royal couple, Albert and Paola, on the other hand, are more fond of fish dishes. “King Albert will like a tomato shrimp.”
And what about our Belgian delicacies? “King Filip is a real Belgian, so I suspect that he sometimes disappears into a chip shop… Prince Laurent is especially a fan of McDonald’s.” Just like everyone else, our royals also have ‘guilty pleasures’. “In the past, King Philip’s private chef had to make tiramisu every day. Mathilde likes to eat Belgian chocolate.”
