King Charles III Cancer Treatment and Prostate Disorders: What You Need to Know

AP/KIN CHEUNG

King Charles III of England and Queen Camilla attend the Christmas service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk, England, on December 25 2023. Monday (5/2/2024) evening London time or early Tuesday morning WIB, Buckingham Palace said the King Charles III had cancer.

The world was recently shocked by the news that King Charles III had to be treated for an enlarged prostate. Not long after being released from hospital, Charles III had to start undergoing cancer treatment, the type of cancer of which has not been revealed by the British Royal Household.

Enlarged prostate disorders are often found in older men. The prostate is a gland located under the bladder. These glands surround the urinary tract which is also where urine or urine comes out. The size of this organ, which only men have, will increase with age.

However, the condition of abnormal prostate enlargement needs to be watched out for. Prostate enlargement can occur due to a blockage in the duct so that it will affect urinary activity.

Some people may think that reduced strength when urinating is a normal condition for older men. However, that is not true.

Disturbances when urinating or urinating can be a sign of an enlarged prostate. These disorders, for example, include difficulty urinating, reduced strength of the stream of urine, having to strain to urinate, intermittent urination, frequent urge to urinate, inability to hold back the urge to urinate, and the presence of blood in the urine.

An examination must be carried out immediately when these signs occur. Further examinations must also be carried out to find out whether there are cancer cells that can cause prostate cancer.

“Disorders of the prostate are often found in men over the age of 50 years. Although there are also those found under that age, it is rare. “Because of this, it is highly recommended for men aged 50 years and over to undergo screening for prostate disorders, especially when urinary disorders occur,” said Professor of Urology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Agus Rizal Ardy Hariandy Hamid when contacted in Jakarta, Wednesday. (7/2/2024).

Agus, who is also a urology specialist in the Urology Oncology Subdivision, Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital (RSCM), said that screening should still be carried out even if no symptoms appear. Because prostate disorders, including prostate enlargement and prostate cancer, can occur without symptoms.

An enlarged prostate cannot be interpreted as a sign or symptom of prostate cancer.

The public also needs to understand that prostate enlargement and prostate cancer are different diseases. Therefore, an enlarged prostate cannot be interpreted as a sign or symptom of prostate cancer.

However, when a person experiences an enlarged prostate, further examinations, including examinations to detect prostate cancer, need to be carried out. If there is a suspicion of prostate cancer, it would be better so that confirmation can be done through examination as well as an early detection effort.

SPECIAL

Aceh residents who contributed to the purchase of the Republic of Indonesia’s first two aircraft in 1950, the Nyak Sandang, were treated at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital, Jakarta, some time ago. He was previously treated by the Presidential Team of Doctors for complaints of prostate problems.

Prostate cancer ranks fifth among the most common cancer cases in men in Indonesia with an incidence rate of 11.6 cases per 100,000 men. Meanwhile the death rate is 4.5 per 100,000 men. Similar to other types of cancer, the majority of prostate cancer patients in Indonesia are found to be in an advanced stage.

Causes of prostate disorders

Agus said that there is no research or evidence that shows a specific cause of prostate disorders in men. In addition, there is no evidence that prostate disorders are related to a person’s sexual activity.

“From the various cases we have handled, the patient’s condition varies. However, to date there is no evidence that prostate disorders are influenced by husband and wife intercourse (sexual activity) that is too frequent or too rare. “An unhealthy lifestyle can actually be a risk factor,” he said.

These risk factors include lack of physical activity; smoking habit; obesity; high consumption of sugar, salt, and fat; and the existence of offspring. Age over 50 years is also a risk factor that must be considered.

That is why, the most appropriate way to prevent problems with the prostate is to avoid these risk factors. The principles of healthy living recommended by the Ministry of Health are very good to apply in everyday life.

This principle is the SMART principle, namely regular health checks, getting rid of cigarette smoke, diligent physical activity, balanced diet, adequate rest, and managing stress. This principle can not only prevent disorders of the prostate, but also various other non-communicable diseases which are also dangerous.

Early detection

Regarding prostate cancer, examination as an early detection effort can be done with blood tests and biopsies. In its development, blood tests to detect prostate cancer can be done through PSA or prostate specific antigen blood tests. PSA blood tests are easier than regular blood tests because they can be done without having to fast.

From the results of the PSA examination, if it shows a high PSA level, the possibility of prostate cancer is also higher. Normal PSA levels are less than 4 nanograms per milliliter.

With these suspicions, further examination with biopsy can be carried out. A biopsy is needed to confirm the presence of cancer. Currently, the newest technology for performing biopsies is available, namely robotic biopsy. Robotic biopsy examination can increase accuracy in sampling prostate cancer.

Previously, Chairman of the Urology Medical Staff Group at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital-Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Irfan Wahyudi, said that the examination for diagnosing prostate cancer with robotic biopsy was faster and more accurate than previous biopsy methods.

In addition, the biopsy time with the robotic method is much shorter and can avoid repeat biopsies. The existence of this technology can support better health services for people in Indonesia (Kompas.id, 22/9/2023).

Agus said that the latest technologies for prostate cancer examination and prostate cancer treatment are already available in the country. So, people should not need to go abroad to get these services.

“Around 80-90 percent of the services for diagnosis and treatment of prostate disorders that are available abroad are already available in Indonesia,” he said.

He also hopes that by making it easier to access services for early detection, more people will want to undergo examinations. Regular health checks are very important, especially for people over 50 years old. The hope is that prostate problems can be detected early so that treatment can be carried out quickly.
