AND princes Carl Philip (43) came into the world, a new crown prince was born. He was originally supposed to be the next king of Sweden, but that didn’t happen.
Break the rule of the king
Just over six months later, the Riksdag resolution changed the Swedish line of succession, meaning that the eldest son inherits the throne regardless of gender. He writes The evening paper and SVT extension.
The constitutional amendment had already been initiated when Crown Princess Victoria was born (45). But only a few years later it came into force.
Now it emerges what King Carl Gustaf (76) really thinks about the change. In the newest SVT documentary “Sveriges sista kungar” the king describes the decision as “difficult”.
– Having laws that work retroactively is not wise, I still think so, the king admits.
He continues:
– My son Prince Carl Philip was born and then suddenly they changed him so that he loses everything. He’s quite strange, I think.
The Swedish king: – It went a bit fast
When asked if he thinks it was unfair, he replies:
– I think so. As a parent, I think it’s terrible.
However, the king believes that the change has been a strengthening for the monarchy, but points out, however, that perhaps it should have happened before the next generational change.
In the documentary it also appears that the Swedish court had asked for an additional interview to clarify what the king thinks of the inheritance, where he seems to maintain his position.
King Carl Gustad adds that the change has not led to a rift between the brothers, and that Prince Carl Philip has “taken it well”.
