Kinder: Anvisa bans the sale of imported branded chocolates

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) published last Thursday evening (14) a press release prohibiting the sale of Kinder brand chocolates imported from Belgium. The measure comes after cases of salmonella were recorded in European countries.

Still according to Anvisa, as informed a little earlier, Brazil is not one of the destinations for the ranges of contaminated products. However, the agency indicated that it is prudent to take the measure to avoid consumption on national soil, especially during the Easter period. The rule only applies to chocolates produced by Ferrero in Belgium.

In a note sent to Olhar Digital, Ferrero, the company that owns the Kinder brand, said that “the voluntary recall that has been carried out in other countries only concerns products from Kinder Surprise, Kinder Mini Eggs, Kinder Surprise Maxi 100g and Lignes Kinder Schokobons made in Arlon, Belgium. These products are not sold by Ferrero in Brazil, so there is no need to talk about removing these items from the country”.

Cas de Salmonella non Kinder

The General Directorate of Health has decided to withdraw several Kinder brand products from the market due to 21 cases of salmonella recorded in the country. Eight people had to be hospitalized because of the problem.

All products withdrawn from the market were manufactured in a factory belonging to Ferrero, the company that owns the Kinder brand, located in the city of Arlon, Belgium. Most cases have been reported in children with an average age of four years.

The French health agency said it had decided to pull the products from the market after investigating and finding that 15 patients had said they had eaten some of the chocolates in the days before symptoms of poisoning appeared.

Additionally, the statement also pointed out that salmonella cases also reported in the UK and Ireland have also been linked to Kinder branded products.

What is salmonella?

According to the Ministry of Health, Salmonella is a bacterium of the Enterobacteriaceae family that causes food poisoning and in rare cases can cause serious infections and even death.

Transmission occurs through ingestion of food contaminated with animal feces. The bacteria are commonly found in animals such as chickens, pigs, reptiles, amphibians, cows, and even household pets such as dogs and cats.
