In the midst of conflicting reports on the health status of North Korea’s ruler Kim Jong Un, his alleged private train has been spotted by US experts on the country’s east coast, according to estimates. The American news site “38 North”, which specializes in North Korea, published satellite images on Saturday (local time) that are said to have come from the previous week. Reports of an allegedly serious illness of Kim, who is only in his mid-30s, have caused a stir internationally for days.
Regarding the satellite images, the US experts themselves wrote that the 250-meter train’s stay in Wonsan says nothing about where Kim is and what his health is like. However, the footage gave weight to reports that Kim was “in an area for the elite on the country’s east coast”. The train could therefore have arrived at a station reserved for the leadership of the communist country before April 21. He was still there on April 23.
There have been speculations about Kim’s health for days. The Presidential Office in South Korea disagreed with reports by the US news broadcaster CNN that the communist ruler was “in serious danger” after an operation. The South Korean news portal “Daily NK” had previously reported, citing an informant in the neighboring country, that Kim had undergone a heart surgery on April 12. He recovered after an operation.
On Sunday, Fox News quoted South Korea’s foreign policy presidential advisor Moon Chung In as saying that Kim was “alive and well”. The ruler has been in Wonsan since April 13. There is no reliable knowledge of the situation in North Korea, which is largely isolated from the outside world. The communist leadership in Pyongyang generally controls information about Kim and his family extremely tightly.
