The internationally isolated leadership of North Korea wants to increase the country’s nuclear power. Ruler Kim Jong Un led an expanded meeting of the Labor Party’s military commission that outlined a “new policy for further expanding the country’s nuclear deterrence,” the state-controlled media reported on Sunday. There had also been discussion about putting the strategic armed forces on high alert. How the new policy looks exactly was unclear. It was also the first report of Kim’s public appearance in over three weeks.

The background of the meeting was said that the participants had analyzed “a series of deficits in the military and political activities of the general armed forces”. The main problem was to improve the capabilities to militarily deter the threatening foreign forces. At the meeting, important measures were taken to increase the firepower of the artillery pieces of the People’s Army.

Speculations about health status

When the military meeting took place was not said. However, it was assumed in South Korea that it took place on Saturday, since North Korea often only reports on important meetings or events a day later.

Kim Jong Un, who is 36 years old according to South Korea, has rarely been seen in public in the past two months. His appearance at the inauguration of a fertilizer factory on May 1 had put an end to speculation abroad about his health. After that, however, he disappeared from the picture. It is speculated that he will significantly limit his appearances and otherwise typical inspection trips through the country due to the coronavirus pandemic. North Korea has so far reportedly not had any proven case of infection. (SDA)
