Kenya: Situation in Dadaab camp continues to deteriorate as cases of malnutrition rise

by Ethan Caldwell

Malnutrition and cholera

In 2022, MSF treated a record 12,007 patients in its pediatric ward and therapeutic nutrition center in Dagahaley, a 33% increase on the previous year. MSF data also shows an upward trend in the overall rate of acute malnutrition among children in Dagahaley camp, which reached 8% in December 2022. This is a 45% increase from the previous screening. in July 2022.

Several complex factors aggravate the humanitarian situation in Dagahaley, and undermine health care capacities in the camp. A cholera outbreak, declared in late October 2022, hit refugee camps as well as communities in Garissa and Wajir counties. Severe drought and protracted conflict in Somalia continue to displace people from the Horn of Africa in search of food and water. More than 50,000 people have arrived in Dadaab in 2022 alone. And an inadequate humanitarian response, due to lack of funding, is adding further pressure especially in the water, sanitation and hygiene sectors, l food, health and protection.
