Competitors are supposed to take over the majority of the real markets. Kaufland also applies to potential buyers. The supermarket giant does not comment on speculation, but has apparently already thought about which real markets should be taken over.
The “Lebensmittel Zeitung” (paid content) reports that Kaufland is particularly interested in real branches in North Rhine-Westphalia and in the north of the country. The focus is obviously on branches that are on average 5,500 square meters in size. Kaufland hopes this will result in new customer flows and higher sales.-
So far, the company has only opened a few stores in northern Germany.
From a competitive perspective, Kaufland would have a good chance of completing the takeovers quickly. The Cartel Office must check and approve each branch takeover beforehand. With this, the authorities also want to ensure that consumers do not suffer any disadvantage from real sales.
There is hardly any competition at a disadvantage for consumers. Especially when suddenly there are two Kaufland markets in one place, where previously there was a real market and a Kaufland market.
