“Karlsruhe Public Service Strike: Hospitals and Transportation at a Standstill”

Hospitals as well as buses and trains will be on strike in Karlsruhe and in the region all day on Wednesday. Because of the warning strike, there are only a few S-Bahn trains in Karlsruhe, as well as hardly any buses and no trams.

S-Bahn, trams and buses in and around Karlsruhe are again affected by public service warning strikes on Wednesday. In addition, extensive actions with warning strikes in the health sector are planned.

Many buses and trains in the Karlsruhe region have stopped

The strike has been in effect since the early shift and affects all S-Bahn and trams operated by the Karlsruhe Transport Authority (VBK) and the Albtal Verkehrsgesellschaft (AVG). Most buses and trains will stop all day. During the first strike in local transport in the current bargaining round ten days ago, only a few S-Bahn trains were running in Karlsruhe.

“The employers have not moved, so we are increasing the pressure before the next round of negotiations!”

KVV customer centers partially closed due to the strike

The Karlsruhe transport company assumes that the S-Bahn lines S1, S11, S4, S5, S51, S7 and S8 of the Albtalverkehrsgesellschaft are largely running despite the call for a strike. According to a statement, the KVV customer centers on the Karlsruhe market square, at the main train station and at Ettlingen train station will remain closed. There may be restrictions at the customer center on Durlacher Allee. The customer hotlines may also not be available.

Strike day in the healthcare sector with a rally in Karlsruhe

At the same time, ver.di is also calling on hospital workers in the region to take part in a strike and day of action. On Wednesday there will be a strike at the municipal clinic and the ViDia clinics in Karlsruhe, the Mittelbaden clinic and the RKH clinics in the Karlsruhe district. Strikes are also planned for Thursday at the Karlsruhe Municipal Clinic. There is also a strike at the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) in Karlsruhe.

Demonstration trains will start on Wednesday morning at the Städtisches Klinikum and the ViDia Klinik in Steinhäuserstrasse. A central rally with a total of around 1,000 public sector employees is planned for 10 a.m. on the Karlsruhe market square.

Next round of negotiations at the end of March

The trade union ver.di sharply criticized the offer presented by the federal and local governments at the end of February. The employers offered an increase in wages of three percent this year and a further two percent in the coming year, as well as tax- and levy-free one-off payments totaling 2,500 euros. The union demands 10.5 percent more salary, but at least an increase of 500 euros.

According to the union, according to the will of the employers, there should also be a special regulation for employees in the clinics and care facilities, according to which they should waive their wages under certain conditions.

“Healthcare workers were applauded and cheered during the pandemic. As a thank you, they should be able to have their wages reduced if a company is doing poorly.”

The employer’s offer has even met with criticism from representatives of local authorities in the Karlsruhe/Pforzheim region.

The third bargaining round will take place in Potsdam from March 27th to 29th and will be accompanied by further protest actions.
