Your question refers to Karim, a patient with Covid, filmed by AFP during his visit to the intensive care unit of the André-Grégoire intercommunal hospital center in Montreuil (93). His hospitalization had been the subject of several false information, relayed in particular by the controversial essayist Idriss Aberkane. The latter accusing him of being staged for the cameras, because he appeared in a report by BFM TV taking place in Montreuil and Nice. Still others confused it with Toufikanother patient placed in intensive care, this time in Bordeaux.

On social networks, some Internet users claimed that the man had died, relying on a tribute published by Lilac Info, the monthly magazine of the mayor of Lilas (Seine-Saint-Denis). To the page 25we can read that Abdelkrim Azzaoui, said “Karim, first name by which he was called, left us on December 20 at the age of 48. Born on February 9, 1973 in Oran, he worked at the town hall of Les Lilas since January 2002. After starting at the CCAS, he held the position of storekeeper, in the maintenance and school catering service for 17 years. Very helpful, always positive, he had a sense of public service and was much appreciated by his colleagues for whom his disappearance is a great shock. His funeral took place on December 24 in his hometown of Oran. To his wife, his three children, his family, his relatives, his friends, the mayor and the municipality presented their condolences.

Contacted by CheckNews, the communication director of the town hall of Les Lilas, Christophe Lalo, confirms that “Karim is indeed the person interviewed on his hospital bed in Montreuil. He was indeed an agent of the city of Lilas and he died of the consequences of the Covid”.
Other elements indicate that it is indeed the same Karim Azzaoui. In the AFP text dispatch, who had met Karim, we learned that he was 48 years old, that he was married to Fatima and that he was the father of a 16-year-old girl and two 13-year-old twins, which corresponds well to the tribute paid by the town hall of Les Lilas. On Facebook, CheckNews was also able to find the profile of Karim, who looks a lot like the patient filmed by AFP, as well as messages of concern and then of mourning posted during his hospitalization by his sister, originally from Oran. Contacted by CheckNews, she confirms the death of her brother on December 20.
