Kalmar FF vs Malmö FF Match Analysis and Result: Kalmar Secures 1-0 Victory

At seventh-placed Kalmar FF, Ricardo Friedrich was back in goal, while Romário replaced Melker Hallberg in midfield compared to the loss against IFK Norrköping last time. Series leader Malmö FF started with the same starting eleven as in Monday’s victory against BP, where 17-year-old Adrian Skogmar started as right back again.

Sebastian Nanasi – on loan to KFF last autumn – had the first finish of the match from a rather dangerous position in the third minute. However, Friedrich steered the shot into the corner. The start of the match was otherwise tentative between two teams that read each other well.

In the 20th minute, Nanasi played Isaac Kiese Thelin in front of the KFF goal. However, the shooting league leader did not choose to shoot, but passed to Stefano Vecchia who saw his finish blocked in front of Friedrich. In the attack afterwards, it was David Kristjan Olafsson who had KFF’s best scoring chance in the half but nodded just outside the goal on a corner.

Barely a quarter of an hour later, MFF changed, again with Nanasi as forward for Kiese Thelin. That time the striker shot but Friedrich saved along the grass and the half ended goalless.

– All right (half). Once we get the game going, we’ll come through, it’s just a matter of taking advantage of those situations. We have a few bad passes and then the chance is gone. It is important to take care of the chances we have, said Kalmar’s Robert Gojani to Discovery+.

– We can do a little more, offensively anyway. Defensively we are doing well.

Malmö’s Stefano Vecchia, about the team’s half, in the same broadcast:

– Quite a lot of ball, I think we will get into some situations. We can threaten them a lot more, I think, he said and continued:

– It will be a bit like we play around it and wait. We have to take the situation when we get the surface and dare to go behind as well.

A quarter into the second half, MFF created a good opportunity when Skogmar pushed in a cross from the right towards Kiese Thelin, but Friedrich steered the finish into the corner. It was the last thing the MFF striker did in the match, because in the 63rd minute, Kiese Thelin was replaced by Taha Ali.

Five minutes later, KFF created by far the best opportunity of the match. Olafsson’s majestic cross ball freed Deniz Hümmet, who turned away Derek Cornelius and only Johan Dahlin remained to outwit, but the MFF captain saved the free position.

MFF dominated possession during the half but continued to have difficulty creating clear scoring chances, while KFF became increasingly dangerous in the transition game, and finally got a payoff in the 95th minute. Simon Skrabb’s cannon shot found its way past Dahlin and hit the crossbar, giving Kalmar a 1-0 victory.

– There was a lot of fighting and duels today. It was a header duel we won in the middle, a wall game and then it was just a matter of sending it into the free corner, says Skrabb to Discovery+.

MFF’s Derek Cornelius in the same broadcast:

– It’s tough. They are compact and have a high line. We tried to get in behind. They had a good match, but we have to be better, he says and continues:

– There are four finals left and we have everything in our own hands.

The result means that MFF is second in the table, two points behind Elfsborg, who overtook thanks to the victory against BP. Kalmar, in turn, is sixth in the table now. Four rounds remain for both teams’ part of the Allsvenskan.

Kalmar’s team: Friedrich (K) – Karlsson (Jafarpour 87′), Sætra, Sjöstedt, Olafsson – Romário (Hallberg 82′), Gojani, Netabay – Skrabb, Hümmet, Trenskow (Shamoun 66′).

Malmö’s team: Dahlin (K) – Skogmar (Lewicki 81′), Cornelius, Olsson, Busanello – Peña, Berg Johnsen – Nanasi (Rosengren 74′), Berg, Vecchia (Jørgensen 81) – Kiese Thelin (Ali 63′).
