Kaiserberg Intersection: Traffic Jams and Modernization Updates – A3 and A40 Junction

More traffic comes together at the Kaiserberg intersection than almost anywhere else in the Ruhr area – on the road, rail and water: According to Autobahn GmbH, 130,000 vehicles recently used the junction of the A3 and A40 per day – and the trend is rising.

The cross from the 1960s is a critical traffic jam point and is currently being extensively modernized. A bridge on the A3 is to be demolished during the autumn holidays.

But exactly below that the trains run on the two east-west connections that are important for the Ruhr area on eight tracks between Duisburg and Dortmund.

From September 29th (9:00 p.m.) to October 13th (9:00 p.m.), the railway is closing numerous routes around Duisburg. The plan is to modernize the track systems.

No long-distance trains at Düsseldorf Airport

In long-distance traffic, the railway plans to route most trains around the western Ruhr area. ICEs and ICs should travel from Dortmund via Wuppertal.

As a result, not a single long-distance train stops in Duisburg, Oberhausen, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Düsseldorf Airport during the autumn holidays.

Only the S1 runs between Duisburg and Düsseldorf – all other local and long-distance trains do not run. Passengers to Düsseldorf Airport will therefore still be able to use the S-Bahn lines S 1 and S 11. There are also buses.

At least some ICEs and ICs are expected to stop in Düsseldorf, Essen and Bochum. All trains are canceled between Duisburg and Mülheim an der Ruhr, as well as between Duisburg and Oberhausen.

In regional transport, this affects the lines RE1 (RRX), RE2, RE3, RE5 (RRX), RE6 (RRX), RE11 (RRX), RE19, RE42, RE44, RB32, RB33, RB35 as well as the S-Bahn line S1.

If you want to know how to get to your destination despite train cancellations and diversions, Deutsche Bahn recommends digital timetable information. At the moment, the changes are only stored there for long-distance trains. A railway spokesman said it would probably take until the first week of September until all cancellations and diversions for regional trains were implemented.

Due to construction work, the railway closed numerous important connections in the western Ruhr area for two weeks during the Easter holidays.

The demolition of the A3 bridge at the Kaiserberg motorway junction will also have consequences for road traffic. However, the Autobahn company will only announce in the next few weeks how exactly cars and trucks will be rerouted. So far there is one bridge in each direction of travel. If one of the two bridges is demolished, all traffic will likely be diverted across the remaining bridge in narrowed lanes in both directions, a spokesman said.
