Justin Diehl Set to Leave Cologne for VfB Stuttgart Amid Failed Contract Talks

Cologne will lose the next top talent. Thomas Kessler spoke on Wednesday about failed contract talks with Justin Diehl, who will probably move to Swabia.

According to consistent media reports, Cologne’s talented striker Justin Diehl is about to move to Bundesliga rivals VfB Stuttgart for a free transfer. Cologne’s head of licensed football, Thomas Kessler, did not confirm this on Wednesday, but his words strongly suggested an imminent farewell.

“Unfortunately, the discussions to date have not led to us being able to agree to continue working with him and to be the next partner to bring him sustainably into professional football,” said Kessler.

It is then completely normal “when a player’s contract expires that he talks to other clubs.” According to reports, Diehl and the Swabian Bundesliga team have already reached an agreement. Diehl, who is currently injured, is a German U20 international. He has appeared eight times for Cologne in the Bundesliga so far.

Kessler said he couldn’t comment specifically, and VfB hasn’t said anything yet either. Kessler said: “Our door is always open for him. We have done everything we can to achieve this and have had an incredible number of discussions. We would be very sorry if he left us. But in the end it is the decision of the player and also his stakeholders.”
