Joao Almeida (22) seemed to be winning the Giro dell’Emilia. However, the Portuguese from Deceuninck – Quick-Step was caught in the final kilometer in San Luca by Alexandr Vlasov, the Russian champion of Astana who has already shown great things in recent weeks.

In an exciting race, one rider made the crossing to the early breakers in the final phase: Joao Almeida. The Portuguese showed himself very strong uphill and soon left his companions behind. Behind him followed a group with Vincenzo Nibali, Jakob Fuglsang, Ulissi, Vlasov, Eddie Dunbar, Giulio Ciccone and Andrea Bagioli. The Portuguese from Deceuninck – Quick-Step started the 2.7 kilometer final climb with a 30 second bonus.
Vlasov decided not to wait too long and left Nibali and co behind. Only Bagioli was able to keep his wheel 1 kilometer from the end. The Italian did everything he could to give his teammate Almeida as much time as possible, but he turned out not to be able to cope with an unleashed Russian. At 500 meters from the finish, Vlasov went up and over Almeida.
For Vlasov, after a stage in the Tour of Provence (before the corona stop) and a win in the Mont Ventoux Dénivéle Challenge, it is the third victory of the season. He also showed his good legs in recent weeks with a fourth place in the Gran Piemonte and a third in the Tour of Lombardy. In Emilia he succeeds the Slovenian Primoz Rogic on the honors list.
