HUBBLESITE – Jupiter’s Great Red Spot and Ganymede’s Shadow (Full-Disk, Color)

This is Jupiter taken by the Hubble Space Telescope on April 21, 2014.

Right in front of you is the Great Red Spot, inside of which you can see a dark, round area that looks like an eye. This dark area is actually the shadow of Jupiter’s moon Ganymede.

When the Hubble Space Telescope acquired this image, the shadow cast by Ganymede on Jupiter’s surface just overlapped the Great Red Spot. Ganymede, with a diameter of 5268 km, is larger than Mercury with a diameter of 4880 km, but still smaller than the Great Red Spot.
