Jamie Dimon Believes AI Will Have a Transformative Effect on Society

JPMorgan Chase CEO and chairman Jamie Dimon believes artificial intelligence innovations will have as big of an impact on society as the invention of electricity and the internet.

In his annual letter to shareholders, Dimon stated, “We are completely convinced the consequences will be extraordinary and possibly as transformational as some of the major technological inventions of the past several hundred years.”

Dimon cited the printing press, the steam engine, electricity, computing, and the internet as examples of technological innovations that have shaped the course of history.

JPMorgan Chase’s Early Adoption of AI

JPMorgan Chase has been at the forefront of AI integration, having started using AI over a decade ago. The company currently has a team of over 2,000 AI and machine learning experts and data scientists, applying AI across various divisions, including marketing, fraud, and risk.

Furthermore, JPMorgan Chase invests $12 billion annually in a wide variety of technologies, including AI, showcasing its commitment to staying at the cutting edge of technological advancements.

The Potentially Far-Reaching Impact of AI Innovation

Jamie Dimon’s comparison in his letter, likening AI innovation to the invention of the internet, suggests that the impact of AI may extend beyond the boundaries of the business world.

Dimon’s standpoint is shared by prominent figures. Billionaire investor Mark Cuban has expressed that technologies like OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT, have the potential for impact “beyond anything I’ve ever seen.” Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates similarly believes that AI “will utterly change how we live our lives, online and off.”

Investing in AI

If you are interested in investing in AI, there are various avenues to consider. While direct stock picking can be risky, investing in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) is a passive and diversified approach that experts often recommend. Thematic AI ETFs, focused specifically on AI or robotics, offer exposure to a range of companies operating in these domains.

Consider the underlying investment strategies and associated fees before selecting any AI-themed ETF.
