Journalistic Tile to NOS and NRC for research Hawija

The Journalist Prize De Tegel in the News category was awarded to journalists from the NOS and NRC for revealing that at least 70 civilian deaths occurred in 2015 in a Dutch air attack on an IS bomb factory in Hawija, Iraq.

“The research has been done very carefully and has great social relevance. Their tenacity is absolutely to be praised,” said the jury about Ben Meindertsma and Lex Runderkamp (NOS) and Kees Versteegh and Jannie Schipper (NRC). Defense Minister Bijleveld had to answer for the issue four times.

In the Reporting category, De Tegel went to stories about the Utrecht trauma of AD journalists Yelle Tieleman, Peter Koop, Carla van der Wal and Tobias den Hartog. Nieuwsuur journalists Siebe Sietsma and Luuk Mulder won the prize in the Foreign category for their story about Maltese passport trade.

Coen Verbraak won the Interview Tile for the series Our Boys in Java and cameraman Ruben Kocx de Storimans-Tegel for his camerawork for one News hour-reporting about cancer patients.

The public award went to the production about ‘Care Cowboys’ by Jerry Vermanen and Dirk Mostert (Pointer), Jolien de Vries (Reporter Radio) and Eelke van Ark (Follow The Money). Of the 13,500 votes cast, this foursome received 2,215.

De Tegel is the most important prize for journalism in the Netherlands. Tiles have been issued since 2007. Prizes were already awarded earlier this week in the Research and Background categories.
