Joško Gvardiol’s Imminent Transfer to Manchester City and Potential Impact on Squad

It has been known for a few weeks that Manchester City are interested in Joško Gvardiol. Now the transfer is imminent.

Joško Gvardiol’s move to Manchester City is taking shape. The Croatian central defender from Rasenballsport Leipzig has informed the Leipzigers of his desire to change, as confirmed by sports director Max Eberl. But what is still missing is the agreement between the clubs.

Eberl told the “Leipziger Volkszeitung”: “Joško and his advisors have given us their wish to move to Manchester City. We are in talks with Manchester. There is nothing more to say about this at the moment.”

The Saxons are demanding 100 million euros, including which they do not want to give up the 21-year-old left foot. Gvardiol’s contract at Leipzig runs until 2027 and with the losses of Konrad Laimer (FC Bayern), Christopher Nkunku (Chelsea) and Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool FC) the loss of another key player could weaken the team significantly. This is one of the reasons why Leipzig is reportedly persistent in the negotiations.

Gvardiol would replace Maguire

Man City is said to have offered more than 90 million euros including bonus payments. But that could change in the near future. The previous record transfer for a defender is 87 million euros. This is the sum Manchester United paid Leicester City for Harry Maguire in 2019.

Gvardiol would be the seventh central defender in the “Skyblues” squad. Alongside Rúben Dias, Nathan Aké, Manuel Akanji, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte, homegrown Taylor Harwood-Bellis could also be included in the squad following his loan spell at Burnley FC. According to the English daily newspaper “The Times”, Laporte is a candidate for sale should Gvardiol move to Manchester.
