Jordanian Prince Called to Ask Saudis to Help King Coup

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Prince Hamza bin Hussein of Jordan called asking for support Saudi Arabia to overthrow his stepbrother who is now the leader of the kingdom, King Abdullah II.

This was revealed in the indictment of the two alleged accomplices of Hamzah released Sunday (13/6).

“Prince Hamzah is determined to fulfill his personal ambition to rule, which violates the constitution and customs of the Hashemite Kingdom,” the indictment document reads.

“In order to succeed, he (Prince Hamzah) is trying to exploit the concerns and problems of the population to stir up incitement and frustration in society.”

The two defendants, Hamzah’s accomplices, consisted of the former Head of the Royal Palace, Bassem Awadallah, who is also a Saudi citizen, and the former special envoy of the government, Sharif Hassan bin Zaid. Both are said to be close to the Saudi kingdom.

Jordanian media outlets reported that Awadallah had close ties to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salam.

The indictment document states Awadallah was “close to Saudi royal officials” and had a network of contacts abroad.

Awadallah and Hassan face trial at the State Security Court at the end of June. According to a team of lawyers, both face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

However, as reported by AFP, Prince Hamzah himself will not be tried for his efforts to “shake the security of the kingdom.”

Authorities say Prince Hamzah’s case has been settled family -wise among members of the Hashemite Empire.

Meanwhile, the Saudis were quick to deny the allegations. Riyadh expressed “full support” for Jordan and the decision taken by King Abdullah II and former Crown Prince Hamza to maintain security and stability.

Separately, Prince Hamzah is reportedly very concerned with Riyadh’s attitude towards the royal drama that dragged him down.

“If something bad happens to me in Jordan, will Saudi officials help me or not?” said Hamzah to Awadallah according to the indictment document.

Prince Hamzah was accused of plotting to shake up the kingdom.

Prince Hamzah was arrested and placed under house arrest in early April for reasons of security and stability in Jordan.

The Jordanian government claims Prince Hamzah is in touch with foreign parties to destabilize the country. Amman claims to have been investigating Prince Hamzah for some time.

However, Hamzah himself denied committing the conspiracy. Prince Hamzah finally pledged allegiance to King Abdullah II shortly after his arrest.

Prince Hamzah is the eldest son of the late King Hussein and Queen Noor. After his father died, Jordan was ruled by his half-brother, King Abdullah.

Hamza lost the title of crown prince after being stripped of him by Abdullah in 2004. He accused Jordan’s leaders of corruption and inability to run the government, causing destruction.

Hamzah did have time to narrate a challenge to the kingdom.

He said he was placed under house arrest at the Palace in Amman. Hamzah was asked by the military not to leave the house and not to communicate with other people.

Hamzah confirmed that he would not obey the order.
