Jordan: Thousands of protesters call for the cancellation of the peace treaty with Israel – 2024-04-02 19:39:17

Activists called for further demonstrations Jordanfollowing days of protests in which thousands of people took to the streets against the massacre at Gauzesimultaneously calling for the termination of the country’s peace treaty with Israel.

The protesters, who gathered near the Al-Kaluti mosque in the Rabieh district, west of Amman, about a kilometer from the Israeli embassy, amid tight security, raised Jordanian and Palestinian flags and banners against the war on Gaza.

It is noted that in 1994, Jordan became the second Arab country (after Egypt in 1979) to sign a peace treaty with Israel, the so-called “Wadi Araba”.

Demonstrators chanted slogans such as, “Wadi Araba is not peace, Wadi Araba is tradition” while wearing the Palestinian keffiyeh headscarf.

The Israeli embassy, where protesters have gathered for five straight days, has become the focus of protests in Jordan since the war began on October 7.

The strict security measures that were put in place yesterday were aimed at limiting the number of demonstrators and the demonstrations were carried out peacefully.

In the previous days, the police riot team had used tear gas against the protesters and hit them with balloons in order to prevent them from approaching the Israeli embassy.
