Joint weekend of MotoGP and WSBK definitely excluded

(Motorsport-Total.com) – When the coronavirus pandemic caused cancellations or postponements of practically all sporting events worldwide in March, various ideas for the future were discussed. For the Motorcycle World Championship, for example, it was said that promoter Dorna could run the two top series MotoGP and Superbike World Championship on the same route on the same weekend.

A weekend together would have its charm, because then you could compare lap times and so on. Even FIM President Jorge Viegas put this proposal in the room as a possible option. The smaller classes of both racing series would have been neglected in this case.

MotoGP and Superbike World Championship will not be contesting a race weekend this year. Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta categorically excludes this from ‘AS’: “Even Viegas said that and I denied it. Nevertheless, people still talk about it.” The Spaniard finds clear words.

Ezpeleta assures: there will be superbike races

“We don’t have the slightest plan and never had the plan to let MotoGP and Superbike ride at the same time. We try to reduce the number of people in the paddock. If we add MotoGP, SBK, SSP600 and SSP300, we would have more than 2,000 people “Maybe some people don’t listen, but I don’t know why that is still said.”

Apart from the logistics and the personnel, there is another problem from the promoter’s point of view. “The television pays for a race weekend. That is why MotoGP and Superbike World Championship will not race on the same route on the same weekend. Who should we present on the podium – Michelin or Pirelli?”

Nevertheless, Ezpeleta assures: “There will be enough superbike races, but not all. This also applies to MotoGP.” The financial and commercial aspect is one issue, the security regulations another. Then there is the logistics. You want to plan everything as sensibly as possible.

That is why the following plan is being pursued: MotoGP is a priority as a more popular and larger racing series. First of all, you want to run a Grand Prix or two over two weekends in a row on a racetrack. The following weekend, the Superbike World Championship will take place on this route.

This would have advantages for several reasons. Rules could be discussed with a country’s local government. The route could adapt to this and the marshals and medical personnel would be optimally trained for the new situation. You would also have all the logistics on site. This applies, for example, to the equipment for the TV broadcasts, which would only have to be set up once.
