Johnson & Johnson Faces Thousands of Lawsuits Over Talc Products that Allegedly Cause Cancer

Jakarta

Johnson and Johnson (J&J) is facing thousands of lawsuits alleging its talc products cause cancer.

The lawsuit claims that the talc product from J&J has caused some consumers to develop ovarian cancer or mesothelioma.

This type of cancer is an aggressive cancer that can affect other parts of the body, such as the lining of the lungs, stomach, and even the heart.

The following are the facts surrounding the new round of allegations that Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder product allegedly triggers cancer.

1. Evidence From Internal Documents

Internal documents show that the company’s loose powder is sometimes tainted with carcinogenic asbestos and this information is kept by the company from regulators and the public.

An investigation by Reuters news agency in 2018 claimed that J&J knew for decades that asbestos was present in its talc products.

Internal company records, trial testimony, and other evidence show that from at least 1971 through the early 2000s, some raw and finished powders from J&J tested positive for small amounts of asbestos.

2. J&J Responsibilities

In response to demands from 38,000 cancer survivors who claim to be victims of its products, Johnson & Johnson agreed to provide USD 8.9 billion in liability.

Despite awarding damages to the plaintiffs, Johnson & Johnson said the billions of dollars earmarked was not an admission of wrongdoing or an indication that their powder actually triggers the condition.

“The company continues to believe these claims are false and unscientific,” said Erik Haas, Vice President of Global Litigation at Johnson & Johnson.
