John Vanbiesbrouck has played close to 1,000 NHL games. The former great goalkeeper has also been presented with the shirt on the roof of the Soo Greyhounds – but now the OHL team will take the shirt down.
On the roof of the OHL team Soo Greyhounds hangs John Vanbiesbroucks shirt. The former goaltender has played 20 seasons in the NHL and won a Vezina Trophy, which goes to the league’s best goaltender, during his career.
After his career, the 60-year-old has been involved in hockey as a leader.
First year as a coach, in 2002/2003 it was in Soo Greyhounds, where he was involved as head coach, club director and owner. Then the icon is said to have also called one of the team’s dark-skinned players, Trevor Daley, the “N-word” instead of his name.
Something that led to Daley leaving the team and Vanbiesbrouck stepping down from his role as head coach.

But now, 21 years later, the club also chooses to take the jersey down from the roof.
“That dark and racist thing is something I’ve had to relive every time I’ve returned to the arena and looked up at the ceiling. Next time I don’t have to look up and relive one of the worst moments of my life,” writes Daley, among other things, in a statement to the Hockey Diversity Alliance.
John Vanbiesbrouck was with the American JVM team as general manager in Gothenburg when the USA took home the gold.
