Joe Biden’s presidency will certainly be very different from Donald Trump’s – the traditional, sober inauguration celebrations on Wednesday seemed to underscore this. This approach also extends to the wardrobe: Biden’s choice of suit already differs significantly from that of his predecessor. Trump was known for his penchant for Brioni suits and long, dangling ties – an America-first president who prefers to wear a prominent European brand. Biden and Trump: so different is their style
Trump and members of his administration often put on a big show with the clothes they wore. “With Trump’s presidency nearing its end, we can see that clothing has indeed not lost its importance – in fact, its importance and influence has grown to terrifying proportions over the past four years,” my colleague Rachel Tashjian wrote last week. Trump’s Brioni suits were the ultimate costume: he wore them as armor when he contracted COVID, and in normal times he wore them oversized with long ties that seemed to represent his … enormous manhood. Biden is already using fashion in a less confrontational way. This approach apparently goes beyond his American dream suit by Ralph Lauren. On MSNBC, Claire McCaskill reported that at some point during the inauguration, a number of Democratic Senators would put on Biden’s signature aviator sunglasses “for a moment of serenity.” After four years of outfits that should aggressively demonstrate power, a moment of lightness is something wonderful.
