Job Announces Increase In Unemployment Benefit Since Mid-July

The Secretary of Labor Carlos Rivera Santiago announced Wednesday that the unemployment insurance benefit will increase from $ 190 to $ 240 weekly starting in mid-July.

According to the official, this represents an increase of $ 50 that will benefit 406,639 citizens in Puerto Rico.

This increase occurs thanks to the signing of Law 167 of 2018 that provides that the minimum weekly unemployment benefit was to increase on July 1, 2020 to $ 60 and the maximum weekly benefit to $ 240.

“Starting today, the increase will begin to be calculated for all citizens who receive economic compensation for unemployment. We are aware of the high cost of living and unforeseen expenses that people who are receiving unemployment insurance have had to face. We hope it will serve as a relief for your familiesRivera Santiago said in a press release.

The secretary recognized that the increase in claims for unemployment insurance increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic and defended that so far some 177,568 people are collecting this benefit, while 184,536 receive compensation for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program ( PUA, for its acronym in English).

Likewise, He indicated that the agency is implementing processes to streamline the disbursement of money to citizens.

“Our staff is working with the greatest speed and diligence to be able to advance with the aid to each of the applicants, as requested by the Governor, Wanda Vázquez Garced. Likewise, our regions are attending to all the cases that we assign them through Turnopr to be closer to the communities and to receive the service that each of the citizens deserves. We will not rest until we can stabilize the service to all those who have requested and meet all the requirements, “stressed the secretary.
