Jesse Klaver Steps Down as Joint Leader of GroenLinks and PvdA: New Leader Yet to be Determined

Jul 19, 2023 at 04:37 Update: an hour ago

Jesse Klaver will not be the leader of the joint list of GroenLinks and PvdA in the coming elections. “If you start a new combination, it must also be led by someone new,” he says in the Wednesday AD. It is not yet clear who that will be.

“To be honest, I would very much like to become party leader. But I’ve known for a while that it wasn’t wise if I did that,” he continues.

“For me, the cooperation between GroenLinks and PvdA symbolizes that politicians can finally step over their own interests for once. Sticking to your party political interests has long held back progress. I hope that my step will give voters confidence that we are really willing to fulfill our personal ambitions set aside for something greater.”

The big question remains who will be the face of the joint group. The names of PvdA prominent Frans Timmermans and Amsterdam alderman Marjolein Moorman, among others, often come up. “Whoever it will be, I will support him or her.”

Klaver will remain in politics

Klaver will remain available for another place on the electoral list, he emphasizes. On Tuesday, Corinne Ellemeet announced that she does not. She was number two on the GroenLinks list in the previous elections. Ellemeet is becoming more and more to assure about the “cold climate” in which politicians have to do their job and does not want to enter the House of Representatives again.

There is not yet an official name for the joint group. “I always talk about the United Links. I don’t know whether the designation will be on the electoral list. I also think GroenLinks-PvdA is a great name.”

Members of both parties voted massively last week to the plan for a joint list and one program for the parliamentary elections next November. At GroenLinks, 91.8 percent supported the plan. This was 87.9 percent for the PvdA.
