Jesper Uneken’s Dream Debut: Young PSV Player Scores First Goal in Resounding Victory

PSV’s resounding victory over AZ (5-1) was given an extra boost in the final phase with the dream debut of the young Jesper Uneken. As a substitute, he scored his first goal in his first few minutes in the PSV first team.

“I couldn’t have wished it better,” 19-year-old Uneken said afterwards, beaming in front of the camera. “Pure joy, a very beautiful moment.”

Uneken is the celebrated man among the PSV players. “I was a little late in the dressing room, but I got a standing ovation,” he laughs. “I had to get on the table and give a speech, but I already don’t remember what I said.”

Peter Uneken, assistant at FC Twente, is overjoyed after son Jesper makes his debut and scores.

Uneken benefits from Pepi dropping out

He normally scores his goals in Jong PSV, but due to the absence of Ricardo Pepi, he was allowed to sit on the bench against AZ. He was secretly hoping for minutes, but that depended on the course of the match. “When Joey shot in that 4-1, you started to hope,” says the young striker, after which the time came a little later. “It went so fast, everyone said, ‘Enjoy it!'”

Father Peter Uneken is an assistant coach at FC Twente, which played at home against Fortuna Sittard later in the evening. Uneken senior walked onto the field visibly proud after seeing the images of his son scoring in Eindhoven. “That’s a really proud father,” he says when he sees the video of himself. “A top evening in everything. I won’t forget this evening, I’m sure.”

“It is especially fantastic for him,” says Uneken senior about junior. “It would be nice if there was another one soon.”

“Copy of Luuk de Jong”

Teammate Joey Veerman was also happy for the debutant. “A really great moment for him. It’s actually just a copy of Luuk (de Jong), only about 15 years younger,” says the PSV star. “He is called Luuk junior in the dressing room.”

Veerman was also impressed with his post-match talk. “It looked like he had prepared him. He had to get on the table and he had to bend over, because he is almost two meters tall. His head almost hit the ceiling.”
