Country music star and philanthropist Dolly Parton has received a $100m (£84.8m) award from Jeff Bezos.
The multi-billionaire Amazon founder announced the award along with his partner Lauren Sanchez.
Ms. Sanchez described Parton as “a woman who gives from the heart and leads with love and compassion in every aspect of her work.”
Bezos’ Courage & Civility Award honors leaders who “pursue solutions with courage and civility.”
“We can’t wait to see all the good you do with this $100 million award,” Ms. Sanchez said.
In a video of the ceremony posted online, Parton exclaimed, “Wow! Did you say $100 million?”
“I think people who are able to help should put their money where their hearts are. I will do my best to do good things with that money,” she added.
The award was launched in 2001, with prizes awarded to activist Van Jones and chef and humanitarian Jose Andres, who created World Central Kitchen, which supplies food to disaster-affected areas around the world.
Parton, a singer-songwriter, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this month.
She is an outspoken supporter of charities and founded the Dollywood Foundation, which distributes books to children around the world.
Parton advocated vaccination against Covid-19.
