Jāzeps Pīgožņa Award: 9th Annual Latvian Landscape Painting Competition

The competition “Jāzeps Pīgožņa award in Latvian landscape painting” was held for the 9th time this year, gathering 135 artists who submitted a total of 227 works of art for the jury’s evaluation. The main award ceremony took place on September 16 in the exhibition hall of the Culture Center of Preiļi County.

The submitted works were evaluated by a jury consisting of professor Aleksejs Naumovs as the chairman of the jury commission, and the artists Laura Pīgozne, Anda Munkevica, Jānis Strupulis, Kristīne Kutepova and Sandra Krastiņa, as well as Silvija Berezovska, the curator of expositions and exhibitions of the Museum of Preiļi History and Applied Art, participated as members of the commission. .

Eight authors were nominated for the award: Dita Lūse with the work “Summer Sounds”, Ilze Smildziņa with the work “In Time”, Inga Jurova with the work “Lielais klusums”, Agnese Kurzemniece with the work “Waiters”, Anna Afanasjeva with the work “By the Sea”, Elmārs Orniņš with the work “Two trees at sunset”, Gita Šmite with the work “Weeping Oak” and Anita Markeviča with the work “Reflections”.

Evaluating the main prize winner Anna Afanasyeva’s work “By the sea”, the chairman of the jury commission, Aleksei Naumov, emphasized that a person is important in the landscape, and this work combines the nature of a woman and nature as a woman. The painting expresses forebodings. This is especially true in the context of the Ukrainian war. The member of the jury commission, artist Sandra Krastiņa, added: “Today we can no longer just look at the landscape and be happy. We live in the landscape.”

9. The recipient of the Jázepa Pigožnias award was born in 1983 in Riga. Graduated from the Painting Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts. Anna Afanasyeva’s main work is painting, and her paintings can be recognized by the filigree images of girls and surprisingly large eyes. The eyes are very important in the works of the artist, because they are the mirror of the soul.

“The era of beautiful art has disappeared, but I still warm it in myself and in my art,” says artist Anna Afanasyeva.

The Jāzeps Pīgožņa award in Latvian landscape painting was established in 2015, the presentation was established by the Riga City Council and the Preiļu County Council in cooperation with the Association of Cultural Institutions of the Riga Municipality Riga St. Peter’s Church Administration, Preiļi Museum of History and Applied Art, Latvian Academy of Sciences, Latvian Academy of Arts, Jānis Anmans Young Talent Support Fund and the authors of the idea – film director and painter Jānis Streič and artists Jānis Anmans and Jānis Strupulis. The purpose of the award is to continue to develop and popularize Latvian landscape painting, as well as to unite the cultural life of the Latvian capital and regions. In 2015, the main prize was awarded to artist Roberts Muzis, professor of the University of Latvia, in 2016 to artist Silva Linarte, in 2017 to artist Aldis Kļaviņš, in 2018 to artist Jānis Plivda, in 2019 to artist Nugzars Paksadze, in 2020 to artist Agra Ritiņa, in 2021 – artist Osvalds Zvejsalnieks, in 2022 – artist Indulis Landaus.
