The sale took place this Saturday, March 13, at Sotheby’s. The carafe was estimated between 25,000 and 75,000 dollars
This Saturday March 13, at Sotheby’s in New York, a decanter of D’Ussé cognac was sold for $ 52,500, or almost 44,000 euros, we learned by consulting the site of the luxury auction house. The precious bottle was sold by hip-hop artist Jaz-Z, ambassador and partner of the brand.
The profits from the auction will be donated to the Fondation Shawn Carter, an association helping American students in difficulty.
This numbered crystal decanter (1/50), with neck enhanced with 24 carat gold leaf, was produced by the house of Otard (Bacardi group) in 2019, for the 50 years of the rap singer. It has the shape of a diamond and houses a Grande-Champagne cognac distilled in 1969. It was sold with its precious wood stand and its leather travel case adorned with a cross of Lorraine. The whole was estimated between 25,000 and 75,000 dollars. The identity or profile of the buyer was not disclosed.
Trendy collector’s cognacs
The March 13 auction will strengthen the reputation of D’Ussé cognac in the United States. The recent brand, created in 2012, is booming. Its sales were multiplied by six between 2014 and 2019. According to the specialist magazine “Impact”, D’Ussé sold 372,000 9-liter cases in the USA in 2019. It occupied more than 5% of the market share, behind the giants Hennessy, Rémy Martin and Courvoisier, but ahead of Martell.
Interviewed in January 2021 by our colleagues from the magazine “Terre de Vins”, Philippe Jouhaud, the director of the company Otard, declared: “We believe that D’Ussé still has significant room for improvement […]. We are going to look for new consumers, which Bacardi and Jay-Z know how to do ”
The March 13 sale also reminds us that collectible cognacs are in fashion. In May 2020, a bottle of cognac, vintage 1762, from the Charente merchant Gautier, had been sold for more than 131,000 euros at Sotheby’s in London. It had been bought by a wealthy Asian collector.
