Japan has decided to suspend three batches – about 1.6 million doses – of the Moderna vaccine that could have been manufactured in Spain “as a precautionary measure” after having found “foreign materials” in several vials.
The Japanese Ministry of Health has reported that foreign substances have been confirmed since August 16 at eight vaccination sites and Moderna’s Japanese partner Takeda Pharmaceutical has urged institutions not to use any abnormal doses.

For its part, a spokesperson for the Moderna pharmaceutical company has reported that the batches are being held while the manufacturing problem is being investigated, the first hypotheses of which suggest that it was produced in its center located in Spain.
Likewise, the Japanese Ministry of Health has detailed that “the size of the foreign substances confirmed in 39 vials is a few millimeters and it is unknown what elements they are”, in addition to belonging to batches produced at the same time in Madrid, according to the Kiodo agency.
The US laboratory has shared that it is working with its Japanese partner and with Japanese regulatory bodies to address potential problems, according to the Bloomberg agency.
